Shedding is not just for longhaired dogs such as Retrievers and Collies – it can also affect other dogs such as the lovely Beagle breed. Luckily there are many ways you can deal with your Beagle shedding.

Although you may not realize it, Beagle shedding is very common.

As your owner, there are number of things you can do to help with your Beagles shedding.

Read on to learn just what this is:

The first step to help with Beagle shedding is brushing. Ideally, you should be brushing your Beagle every single day. You should be able to purchase a special grooming brush from a pet store or even from your local vet. As an added bonus, brushing your Beagle every day is an excellent way to bond with them.

If you feed your Beagle a healthy and nutritious diet, then this will aid in lessening the amount of hair your Beagle sheds. So make sure you choose a quality and reputable brand of dog food for your beloved Beagle. It’s also a good idea to check the back of the packet to make sure it holds all the important nutrients your Beagle needs.

Another great tip to deal with your Beagle shedding is to give your beloved pet regular baths. When bathing your Beagle, it’s really important that you don’t use human shampoo as this isn’t meant for dogs. Instead, purchase some special dog shampoo from your local pet store or vet.

A simple way to get rid of unwanted Beagle hair around your home is to vacuum on a regular basis.

Lint rollers are an excellent way to help remove unwanted Beagle hair from your furniture and clothing. They are a very handy devise to have around if you do own a Beagle. You simply roll the lint roller over your clothing or furniture and the sticky tape on the roller will pick up any stray Beagle hairs.

A great way to deal with the hair from your Beagle shedding is to make sure your couch has removable covers. When these covers get too ‘hairy’ just simply remove and wash them.

If your Beagle seems to be shedding an unusually large amount of hair to what they normally do, then it might be a good idea to make an appointment with your local vet. They will be able to check your Beagle out to make sure there is nothing out of the ordinary going on

Most dogs shed hair – it is part of their nature. So remember this and do not be alarmed if your Beagle does start to shed hair. As you can see from the above, there are many different ways you can deal with this Beagle shedding. But remember, as previously mentioned, if your Beagle is shedding a large amount of hair that is out of the ordinary, then make an appointment with your local vet. They will be able to let you know if it is anything to seriously worry about.

Are you discovering a few too many accidents on your nice clean floors? Well then it may be time to start Beagle potty (toilet) training.

The last thing you want is a yucky mess on your nice clean floors, therefore it’s important to start Beagle potty training as soon as possible. However, remember it will take time and patience but the end results will be well worth it.

The following tips will help you get started with Beagle Potty Training:

Firstly, you need to establish a place where your Beagle is to go potty (go to the toilet). For example this could be a corner of your backyard.

Regularity is key when Beagle potty training. This means taking your Beagle to potty at set times every day. For example you could take your Beagle out to potty when they first wake up and after they have finished a meal.

Another important part of Beagle potty training is repetition as the more you repeat something the more your Beagle will remember it. For example, you should use a certain word or phrase for when you want your Beagle to go potty such as “toilet”. Repeat this word or phrase every single time you take your Beagle to potty. Your Beagle should soon come to understand what this phrase means and they should go to the toilet when they hear it.

When Beagle potty training, it’s vital you stay alert for any signs that your Beagle may want to go potty. A common sign is when your Beagle starts sniffing the ground or moving in a circular motion. If you see your Beagle doing this then move them to their designated toilet spot straight away.

It’s a good idea to use rewards for when your Beagle does go potty in the correct spot. This will encourage your Beagle to keep going in the correct place in the future. Rewards could be anything from praise and affection to a little treat.

One of the most important things to remember when Beagle potty training is that there will be mistakes and you will come across a few yucky messes on your carpet. It’s so important that you do not get angry at your Beagle if they do have an accident. This means no hitting or Beagle or yelling at them. If you do this then it will just make your Beagle anxious and it will prolong the potty training process. Instead, if your Beagle does make a mistake, just quietly clean up the mess and get rid of any odor so that your Beagle does not try to go potty again in the same location.

Remember, Beagle potty training will take time and you will not see results overnight. However, if you put in your time and patience you should end up with a Beagle who knows exactly where to potty which in turn will save your nice clean floors! So take the above tips and start Beagle potty training today!

Do you own an adorable Beagle? Are you curious as to what you should be feeding them? Well you have come to the right place!

Keep reading to learn all about Beagle food.

It is a common fact that Beagles love food! In fact, Beagles will often eat anything in sight. If you leave food out and turn around for a minute, there is a high chance that your Beagle may try and sneak some! If this happens your Beagle may become unhealthy and obese. To avoid this from occurring, it’s vital you learn all about Beagle food and how to manage it. So keep reading to learn some useful information on Beagle food:

The following information on Beagle food is just a guide. If you have any serious concerns or are really confused about what you should be feeding your Beagle, then you should consult your local vet. They will be able to provide expert advice based on your Beagles weight and age.

A Beagle should be fed three quarters to one and half cups of dry food every day. However this should be divided into two separate meals. Remember – this is just a guide – it also depends on the size of your Beagle, the age of your Beagle and how much exercise they do.

Beagle puppies will be fed differently than older Beagles. Ask your local pet store or vet for advice on what Beagle food you should be feeding your puppy.

It’s important to buy high quality Beagle food. Higher quality Beagle food will have more nutrients which will benefit your Beagles health.

As previous mentioned Beagles will eat anything in site. Therefore it’s important to put all food safely away if you own a Beagle. This also includes keeping a firm lid on your rubbish bin so your Beagle can’t have a rummage. If you do this then you will lessen the chance of your Beagle eating the wrong types of food. It will also lessen the chance of your Beagle becoming obese.

Chewing bones or special Beagle chew biscuits is really good for your Beagles teeth and gums. You should give your Beagle a small bone or chew biscuit every second day.

Giving your Beagle a bone is a great way to keep them entertained when you leave them at home on their own.

If you own a Beagle, it’s vital that you don’t leave chocolate sitting around. Chocolate is toxic for dogs so to protect your Beagle make sure you leave all chocolate in places that your Beagle can’t access.

Beagles are known to just eat and eat and eat and won’t stop. To prevent this, it’s best you don’t leave their food out for them all day. Once your Beagle has finished their meal, take away their bowl so they know that mealtime is over.

When training your Beagle, try and use positive words and cuddles as rewards instead of treats. However, if these rewards do not work then you may need to try treats as a last resort. If this is the case then make sure you choose small treats over bigger ones.

Along with Beagle food, it’s also important to make sure your Beagle has enough water. Your Beagle can get very sick if they become dehydrated. So keep an eye on your Beagles water bowl and always make sure it is nice and full.

As mentioned above – Beagles love food! Therefore it’s vital you take the above advice and monitor your Beagles food intake. If you do this, your Beagle should live a long, happy and healthy life.

Are you looking for ways and means how to rehab your Beagle?

We are going to use the word rehab here in three contexts – how to rehabilitate a beagle, which has been rescued from a dog center, how to rehabilitate a beagle which has bad habits and how to rehabilitate a beagle which has been injured.

Rehab Your Beagle – Weaning It Away From Medicines

It is possible that your vet has given your beagle some medicines which were part and parcel of its treatment. You want to rehabilitate your beagle by getting it to stop eating those particular medicines. Your beagle is showing withdrawal symptoms. It is moody and easily irritated. It is lethargic. So how do you rehab your beagle when it is on medicine or has gotten addicted to some particular not very healthy drug?

Firstly – never try to deprive your dog of that medicine by cutting off the supply.

Ask your vet to reduce the dosage. This is going to give the dog’s body plenty of time to get used to a smaller dosage.

Reduce the frequency of the dosage, from three times a day to two times a day, if you are giving it medicines.

Do not try drastic deprivation methods by lowering the dosage considerably and all at once because that is going to harm your beagle.

Rehabilitation of an injured beagle

This is only going to be done in cases when the beagle has suffered from injuries, including injuries to the ligaments and muscles. Physiotherapy and proper exercise as well as care of the injured part is going to help that particular muscle working again. If your beagle has a hurt leg, the muscles should be given time to cure them. Make sure that your beagle does not move about or jump about. That is going to be difficult because beagles are naturally exuberant. So an injured dog can only be rehabilitated, if it is kept quiet.

Physiotherapy and treatments recommended by your vet are going to improve the health of your dog considerably.

How to rehab your beagle when it is obsessed with something?

Your beagle may have a behavioral problem of being obsessed with something. It is going to whine or just stare at you, until you give it that thing. Rehabilitation in such a case is very easy on you have to do is distract the beagle. That is going to be done by diverting his attention to one other interesting thing, when it starts to whine. It is soon going to get interested in that puzzle, game, toy, food or even a piece of favorite music.

Beagle Rehab – Rescuing A Beagle From A Rescue Center

Just imagine that you have rescued a terrified beagle from a rescue center. Look at the dog psychology. It cannot understand why its masters left it all alone. It also cannot understand who you are and why you decided to bring it into your home.

The problems which you are going to face here are acceptance problems, the beagle trying to get away and finding its original master, growling, barking, whining and other behavioral anomalies.

Here are some easy tips which you can utilize to make your beagle get more used to you.

Do not approach it in a hasty manner. Your approach towards it should be casual.

Do not smile; showing your teeth is an aggressive behavior sign for dogs.

Keep calling its name in a gentle fashion.

Leave some food and water in a bowl, and then walk away.

Do not pat it while it is eating.

If it starts to whine, call its name softly. It just wants to know whether you are there or not.

If it continues whining, bring it near you. Make eye contact. Say that you are there. Not your head. Then look away and continue your work.

It may stop whining and then start again. Now ignore it.

Remember, rehabilitation of any kind means physical and chemical healing of the mind and body. So whatever sort of rehabilitation is needed by your beagle, this can only be done through proper advice given to you by your vet, if it is a medical condition. If the rehabilitation is about making it accustomed to your presence, well, that is going to take perseverance, love, and plenty of patience.

So now that you know how to rehab your beagle, try out these tips and techniques, right away.

How do you stop being Beagle whining? A number of Beagle owners suddenly notice that their dog is whining continuously, without any apparent rhyme or reason.

This may worry them. On the other hand, they might ignore the whine, hoping against hope that their Beagle is going to shut up on its own. Both these actions are counterproductive.

Stop Beagle whining – Reasons for Whining

If your dog is whining continuously, here are some reasons why your dog has suddenly started this irritating behavior when it was a well behaved and quiet dog a couple of days ago.

A continuous is a dog’s way of trying to get your attention.

It is possible that they want you to give them something.

It is also possible that your dog is in pain and its whine is a request for help. In this case you have to differentiate whether your dog is just being irritating or frivolous or is it a need of some help?

Does the dog think that he is being neglected and you are eating something of which it would want a bite? It is immediately going to show its displeasure in a high-pitched whine. In answer, just place one of the goodies in front of it, and say very firmly”quiet.” Then ignore the whines. You have paid it attention. You have listened to it. Now, you do not intend to listen to anymore of its attention seeking noises.

Stop Beagle Whining – Recognize The Reason

Does your dog whine when it is separated from you, especially at night? You need to look at your dog’s behavior very carefully here. Tell it firmly that it is time for it to go to sleep. Ignore its whines, and it is going to stop trying to seek attention in this manner, because it knows that you are not going to come back and pay it attention. On the other hand, it should understand that you are nearby. It is thus going to feel secure. Make its sleeping space more welcoming. Tell it that you are near it. Give it a small treat and pat it affectionately before you leave.

Consider your puppy to be a baby not ready to go to sleep yet. The whine means “Can I play with you a little more?” If you pay attention to the whines, they are going to become one of the bad behavioral habits.

You also need to recognize that particular pitched whine which means that your dog needs to go out right now. That is his way of telling you, “please open the door right now.” Once it recognizes the fact that you recognize that whine and act on it, it may communicate this need to you, in that particular whine and tone again. Consider that it has trained you to respond to that whine!

Stop Beagle whining – Do Not Punish your puppy

Do not punish your dog if it is whining. Instead look at the reasons behind that behavior. If you respond to its whines instead of ignoring them, you are reinforcing the power of this irritating noise in its little Beagle brain. It knows that it has the upper hand and you are going to rush to its side, the moment it starts howling and whining.

Instead, try distracting it. Possibly it has started to whine because it does not have anything to do. Return to the room immediately after the dog stops whining. This will make it understand that whining cannot bring you back.

Guaranteed effective tip to stop Beagle whining

Here is one tip which is guaranteed effective to stop Beagle whining. Fill up a metal box full of coins and nails. The moment the Beagle starts to whine, shake that box vigorously. It is going to start associating that whine with that scary noise. Also, leave a radio on low near your puppy, when you put it into its box. The sound of the music is going to reassure it that there is someone near it.

Remember that you are smarter than your Beagle and stop Beagle whining is not difficult at all!

Getting To Know More about Beagles And Kids

How do beagles and kids relate to each other? Beagles are among the most popular of dog breeds, not only because they are really lovable, but also they have very affectionate and friendly personalities.

Beagles are small enough to be kept in a flat, so here are some reasons why you can choose a Beagle to be one of the best pet choices for your kids.

Why choose a Beagle?

Beagles live for 12 to 15 years, so you know that your child is going to have a lovable playmate, throughout his childhood. Also, they are loyal, affectionate and protective towards their human masters. So if you are willing to commit you to nearly a decade and more of caring for your Beagle, well, it is your choice. However, you are never going to regret adding this lovable member to your family.

Here are some good reasons why beagles and kids go really well together –

Beagles love exploring and so do kids. So you should not be surprised if your kids and your pet decide to go exploring in places, where there are plenty of exciting “smells.”

Beagles love to eat and so do normal, healthy kids. So, keep them well fed, so that your Beagle does not get an opportunity to go foraging for food just because he felt “peckish.”

Beagles are extremely good with kids, because they are always ready to join in any game, which involves lots of energetic running and chasing.

Beagles are stubborn; however, they find it easier to “communicate” with kids than with adults. That is why your Beagle being trained by a responsible 13-14 year-old kid – with lots of love, care and patience – is going to be a really well behaved, well-trained pet.

My kids are going To Take Care Of This Beagle

Many householders by beagles or any other dog breed, just because they have been promised by their children that the dog is going to be fed and taken care of, by the children of the house. Sorry, it does not work that way. Ever. The children may be very enthusiastic about taking care of their exciting new pet for the first couple of days, but you are going to find them shrugging off their responsibility within the week.

So remember that taking care of the Beagle is going to be your responsibility. The Beagle is there to provide plenty of amusement and companionship to your kids. It is your job to keep it well fed, well groomed and healthy.

This is the reason why so many dogs are given up. The parents do not have the time or the energy to take care of such a responsibility and that is why they leave their pets on the roadside, and drive away. They might even leave their dog at an animal shelter. Do not let that happen to your Beagle.

Beagles and kids – Precautions

One would suggest not buying a Beagle for a toddler because even though they are gentle, there is always the chance of the baby getting nipped accidentally.

Do not buy a Beagle or any other breed of dog, if your child is suffering from allergies. Beagles are notorious “shedders”. So you might find your child suffering from dog dander and hair.

Remember that your adorable beagle puppy is going to be as energetic as a two-year-old. It will need 24 x 7 supervision, so if you already have a baby, toddler or very young child in the family, please do not take on extra responsibility by buying a dog. If you really want to buy a dog, then look for a young adult, which has already been housetrained.

So now that you know that beagles and kids go really well together, one would suggest you look for a young adult beagle for them.

Do you want to know how much do beagles cost? Well, the price range can start from USD200 to even USD1000, depending on your beagle’s bloodline. So, here are some easy tips and techniques, which you are going to find very useful while you are looking for beagles.

Trying your city’s Animal Rescue Shelter Or Group

It is possible that you are going to get a beagle completely free here, because many people are quite capable of leaving their purebred dogs in such shelters.

Look at these points before you choose a pet from the animal rescue shelter –

Does it have behavioral and health problems? You do not want a pet that cannot adapt itself to a family.

Has it been vaccinated? Does it have any microchips showing its ownership? In such cases, it means that that pet has merely been misplaced or lost. Buying such a pet could cause difficulties, especially when the original owners come to lay claims on that pet, with relevant papers.

Look through a number of websites like save a pet.com, and even SOS beagles.org. Please get in touch with such sites. You can get information of a beagle which has been left there.

These beagles can be available to you, free of cost, if you are lucky. They just need somebody who loves them.

Why you should not Choose A Puppy Store?

Have you decided to “buy a puppy- going cheap,” from the pet store just because you found it looking at you through the window? Well, I would not suggest this as an option, because you do not know about their pedigrees. You are going to be spending more than USD500 on a puppy, without knowing anything about their bloodlines. These dogs are over bred, because their owners are more concerned about earning lots of money from their breeding bitches.

Reputable dog breeders are going to have purebred pups, which are normally sold from anywhere between USD200-USD500 and more depending on the bloodlines. However, if you are just looking for pet beagles, without bothering about show dogs, look for a price range between USD150-USD300, depending on the breeder.

If you are lucky, you may even find somebody in the neighborhood with a beagle willing to give that pet to you. This happens only when the owner does not have the resources nor the time to take care of his pet. It would be sensible to ask the owner for a price.

Giving away a dog free is quite rare; nevertheless, you can ask around dog rescue shelters, pet shelters and other such places for a beagle in need of a loving home and responsible masters.

Supposed Behavioral Problems – Why Do People Discard Their Beagles?

Why are many of these beagles left in animal rescue shelters? That is because their owners have no idea about a beagle’s true nature. They consider their pet to be stubborn. Supposedly, it does not listen to orders nor does it respond to their commands. They consider beagles to be dumb. That is definitely not so. They also think that it cannot be housetrained.

Remember that the beagle is primarily a hunting dog. You cannot claim to have “tamed” something, which has well honed natural instincts requiring minimal human interference. These are primarily hunters.

So, as long as you know that your beagle expects the minimum of interference from you and how much do beagles cost, look for the best beagle sale deal in your city. It is going to be well worth it.

Wanting to learn how to socialize your beagle?

Firstly, you need to understand why your beagle needs to be around people and other canines. That is because beagles are by nature social dogs. They are going to get depressed if they do not have people and dogs around them to sniff. They prefer the presence of dogs and other animals best, but humans come a close second. They also start feeling insecure if they are left all alone without human company for a long period of time.

That is why it is necessary to socialize your beagle while it is still a puppy. It is been going to understand that other human beings and dogs are “friends,” and not something of which to be terrified.

Beagle socializing tips

Here are some points which you would need to keep in mind before you let your beagle meet other dogs.

Make sure that your beagle is well-trained. It is going to be so excited when it meets its friends that it may decide not to obey your commands to come back to you. This is one of the occupational hazards of Beagle socializing.

If you intend it to meet and make friends in the park, make sure that it is kept away from larger dogs. Beagles are small in size, but they are hunting dogs. They would enjoy getting into an argument with other dogs.

Your beagle’s – like other dogs – attitude towards people and other dogs are going to depend on a number of factors like its experiences as a puppy, its bloodlines and its genes. So that could make all the difference between a shy and scared puppy or an exuberant and happy, well-adjusted puppy.

Beagles should start this socializing routine while they are between 7 to 14 weeks. This is the best time when they start learning about training sessions. They have to get used to other dogs, kids and adults.

A beagle which is kept away from any sort of company is going to get aggressive. So socializing in a club, on the beach or in a park where it can meet kids, adults, and other dogs is advisable.

Remember that your beagle needs to learn the word “come,” before you try out any socializing. Otherwise, it might decide to follow its new best friend home, especially if you have taken it off the lead. However, taking your beagle off the lead is not recommended, while you are training it or while it is “socializing”.

Beagle socializing clubs:

If you are lucky, you may have some Beagle socializing clubs in your locality. Or you may start a club of your own, with other beagle owners joining it. In this manner, you are going to get an opportunity to speak to other beagle lovers. You are also going to get your beagle an opportunity to meet with its own beagle friends.

A beagle being a pack dog needs the companionship of some dogs to learn natural instinctive dog behavior which has been interfered with, through human company, training and interaction. That is why it is necessary that you look for places where your beagle can socialize.

Remember that a happy, healthy and normal beagle looks forward to plenty of fun, meeting new people and new dogs- every day. Every day is a new adventure for a beagle. So , these how to socialize your beagle tips are going to teach your beagle to accept these exciting new additions into its life.

“What should I train my Beagle?” is a question which is going to be asked by a number of beagle owners.

The usual training words are “sit”, “stay”, and “heel”. However, you would need to teach your Beagle some other commands. So how do you go about doing that in a systematic manner?

Benefits of training and teaching your Beagle:

You are going to have a well behaved and happy Beagle.

You do not have to worry about its being destructive.

You have a housetrained Beagle

You have a beagle which obeys your commands.

This training is going to be done in a systematic and disciplined manner which means that you will not be using any “force tactics” on your Beagle.

Teach Your Beagle not to jump

Beagles, like any other dog breeds enjoy jumping on their masters, in order to show their affection and enthusiasm. In fact, this is the way they greet anybody who they recognize. You have to teach your Beagle not to jump on visitors as well as people of the family. This can be done in a very easy manner. The moment you see your Beagle running towards you to greet you, just move away in a swift movement. Do not make eye contact with your Beagle. Do not say a word. And above all, do not run away in a panic. This last is going to make your Beagle follow you. You might find yourself getting nipped because you need to remember that beagles are primarily hunting dogs.

This “deflection” by moving away when your Beagle wants to launch itself at you, means that your Beagle has not reached its target – you. Do not look at it. Do not say a word. Once it recognizes the fact that you do not want to “communicate” with it, when it intends to greet you, it is going to settle down. It is only then that you make eye contact with it, pat it and say some affectionate words to it.

House train your Beagle

It is necessary that you start to house train your Beagle, from day go itself. If it has messed up an area in your house, pick up the Beagle, take it to the mess, tap it firmly on its nose and say “no. ”After that, you pick up the mess and take it to the place where you want the Beagle to relieve itself in the future. A couple of “taps”, every time it makes a mess will soon make it understand that you do not want it messing any area apart from the area that you have set out for it in the yard. Tell it to your Beagle firmly. Your dog is capable of understanding your words, when you repeat your instructions and commands to it with actions.

How to stop Your Beagle From Chewing

Beagles are hunting hounds. They are also a social dog breed and that is why they want to be around people or other beagles. You may find your Beagle chewing up anything which it considers to be edible.

So “what should I teach my Beagle?” – Your priority here is to teach it not to chew anything or everything. This is when you have to use alternative psychology. This is going to be taught to it while it is still a puppy. Divert its attention towards one of its soft, chewy toys. Hand that toy to your Beagle. Try to take away the thing which it is chewing. Your Beagle is going to growl. Say no to it very firmly. Make it understand that if it wants to chew, that activity has to be done on the chewy toy and on nothing else. This behavior has to be reinforced throughout puppyhood, otherwise you are going to have a very destructive Beagle.

Clicker training – How to teach your Beagle to obey you

Clicker training is now considered to be one of the effective and humane methods through which you can train your Beagle. This uses the reflex psychology of a dog. The moment he hears a command and hears the click, it understands that it has to obey the command which it has learned. These include sit and stay. After that, it knows that it is going to get a pat of appreciation or a treat. This reflex psychology works wonders when you try to train your Beagle. Beagles would prefer treats, after they have been told that they have been “good dogs.”

Remember that if you are wondering about “what should I teach my Beagle?” training and teaching your Beagle would take just a little bit of consistent perseverance and lots of patience. But the results are going to be well worth it!

Want to learn how to stop your Beagle from jumping?

A number of Beagle owners are rather worried because they find their pets either jumping on them, or on their visitors. This can be quite startling, especially during a get together, when one does not expect one’s clothes to be mussed up by a very excited little beagle. So how do you stop your beagle’s jumping?

Easy Training Tip-Stop Your Beagle Jumping

The tips here are going to teach you how to stop your Beagle from jumping –

On people.

On couches and other furniture.

On beds.

You are going to be surprised to know that this is the easiest Beagle behavior, which can be solved very easily. Your Beagle is trying to get your attention by jumping on you. Also, it is showing its territorial instinct by jumping on a couch, which is considered to be its own possession.

So the next time you see your Beagle running towards you, to jump on you in greeting or in enthusiastic welcome, just turn your back to it. It may feel a little bewildered, and is going to wonder why you have done that. It may move to you, face you, and try to jump on you again.

Turn your back to it again. This is going to teach it that you do not like its jumping on you.

How to Stop My Beagle Jumping On Couches, On Counters Or On Chairs

You cannot try out this technique on heavy chairs. However, if you see your Beagle ready to jump on a lights chair, get there first. Pick the chair up and say “no!” firmly. Move the chair away. You will have to do this a number of times so that it understands that any furniture on which it jumps is going to be moved away. Beagles are very intelligent. However, any disciplining methods which are not consistent are going to confuse them. So continue this way of disciplining them, whenever you see it trying to jump on a couch, or on the chair.

How Do I Stop Beagle Jumping On My Bed?

Well, this is where you have to be very firm. If your Beagle has got into the bad habit of getting into your bed, ever since it was a puppy, it is going to be surprised if you suddenly decide that it had better sleep in its basket.

A puppy jumping on your bed has to be put down firmly. Say “no” firmly. Make sure that your children do not encourage it to disobey your orders. Above all, never hit your dog while you are disciplining it. It is going to associate any discipline with pain. That is going to make it terrified of you.

You can also use this method to stop it from jumping on you. If it shows intentions of jumping on you to greet you, move away, and ignore it. It is going to be a bit bewildered for a couple of seconds. If it still tries to jump on you, do not say anything and again move away. It is thus going to understand that you do not like or you do not accept this behavior. This is the easiest training method for preventing your Beagle from jumping on you or any other person visiting your house. Once your Beagle settles down and shows no sign of jumping, say “good boy,” and scratch it behind its ears.

It is really easy to stop your Beagle from jumping! So try out these Beagle training techniques right now.

Are you looking for the best tips and techniques how to exercise your Beagle?

Beagles are definitely not good pets for all those people who could not be bothered to go out for walks. They need plenty of opportunity to go out in the fresh air, every day in order to keep healthy and happy. In fact, a happy beagle is one who has a master who does not mind putting it on a leash and walking miles and miles, every day, just for fun.

A Beagle in the Yard

So, if you have a beagle in a yard, remember to leave it loose in the yard, at least three times a day and spend about a half an hour playing with it. This is going to include running after Frisbees, playing tag, playing chase, and other physical activities. Beagles love kids. Also, they are hunting dogs and that is why they are used to running across country and outdoors. So if your kid enjoys going out in the open exploring with a beagle, well, it is well worth choosing a beagle as a pet.

Why do beagles need to be exercised more than other dog breeds?

A beagle can be considered to have a short attention span. So if it is not exercised it is going to be bored. It is going to start destroying things in order to gain attention.

So here are some exercise routines which you can try out with your Beagle, right away.

Try running with your Beagle. This is going to keep your dog healthy as well as keep you fit.

Ask your beagle’s vet for the best age when it can start running with you. One year old beagles can join in your running routine every day.

Popular Beagle exercise games

Beagles, being hunting dogs love to fetch. So they are going to enjoy games, which include fetching something which smells really nice. One good game is to dip its favorite toy in something which smells good to dogs. Let it see that item. Say “fetch” and throw that item into the yard. The moment the dog brings that item, say “drop it” and give it a treat. Beagles can play this game for hours.

The treat has to be given only once. The other times, give it an appreciative pat and a “good boy.”

Beagles love playing with balls especially when they have to fetch them. So if you can get into a “fetch and run” game with your Beagle, at least once a day, it is going to appreciate it very much.

Try getting your Beagle to run behind a flying ribbon, held in your hand. This is one game they are going to find very enjoyable. This also makes sure that they do not put on weight through lack of exercise.

Remember that your dog is full of high-energy, which has to be worked off every day. So you need to put in at least half an hour sessions of exercise along with your dog, at least twice a day.

A dog which is tired out is less liable to get into mischief through sheer boredom. Also, it is happy that it is around its master.

So now that you know how to exercise your Beagle and you know why it is so necessary to exercise it every day without fail, please take it for a walk, right now!

Before you intend to buy a beagle and make it a part of your family for the next 10 to 15 years, you need to know how to Beagle proof your house.

Remember that beagles are basically not house pets, even though they are very affectionate. They are natural hunting dogs. That is why the Beagle is one of the more adventurous of dog breeds. This means that it is capable of biting through, digging under, jumping over fences in order to go out and explore.

That is why you need to go about beagle proofing your house in a very systematic manner.

How to Beagle Proof Your House – Making It Worthy Of A Beagle!

Keeping a beagle in a flat is not advisable. A beagle is a social animal. If you intend to lock your Beagle up in your house and then go off to office, you are going to come home to a totally wrecked house. That is because the lonesome Beagle went around the house searching for you. It did not find you. It got bored and decided to destroy everything. It saw some shoes and clothes on the ground. It chewed them up. Then it noticed some furniture. It did some chewing on the furniture legs. It got hungry. It drank out of the toilet bowl and wrecked your bathroom, too. This is just one example of what a bored Beagle can do.

You child proof your house, do not you? Beagle proofing is done in that same manner. You need to keep your Beagle safe. In the same manner, you need to keep the things in your house safe from your Beagle.

Get rid of all the plants in your yard.

Remove the wire netting and put up a fence. Beagles have been known to jump over fences, 6 feet high, so raise the height of the fence.

Make sure that the area around the fence is covered with rocks. This is going to prevent your Beagle from digging out of your yard

Keep your Beagle within your sights, when it is playing about in the yard. Thus you can get to know if it is up to some mischief trying to escape to the Great Outdoors.

Remove any children’s swimming pool or area where water is stored.

Stash all your easily reachable stuff away like clothes, papers, shoes and books.

How do you Beagle proof your rooms?

Get down on all fours. Imagine that you are a beagle. What do you see in front of you? Can you bite it, destroy it or chew on it? Stash it away.

Your curious little Beagle is quite capable of biting through electric wires and telephone wires. So any loose wires should be battened down firmly.

Your dog should not be allowed to enter an area in which there are electrical wires, like your computer wires, television wires, music system wires etc.. Fix them to the wall, if you cannot prevent your Beagle from entering the area.

If you have a staircase in your house, use a baby gate to prevent it from climbing up the stairs. This is going to stop your little Beagle puppy from tumbling off the stairs.

Prevent your Beagle from opening your kitchen cabinets by installing guards for the doors. This is going to stop your Beagle from getting in among the household cleaning agents and harming itself.

Keep the bathroom door locked and the toilet seat down. No dog ever did good to itself by using the toilet seat as a drinking bowl.

These are just some commonsense methods how to Beagle proof your house. Try them out right now and make sure your little Beagle is safe.

Are you looking for the best way to stop Beagle growling?

Many Beagle owners are rather surprised when their docile animals suddenly start to growl, and show their fangs, whenever their owners or other human beings approach them. This behavior is very surprising because beagles are considered to be among the most loving, affectionate and docile of dog types.

Why is your Beagle growling?

Just imagine that you approach your Beagle. It is guarding something, say, a child’s toy, or perhaps a piece of clothing. You want that item. It growls. You back off. That is because you are astonished and surprised at this unusual behavior. Some owners are even frightened, because they associate a growl with potential aggressive behavior.

Here are some reasons why your Beagle has started growling-

Growing beagles are marking out their own particular possessions. It is almost like a little child, saying “this toy is mine and I am going to scream if you take it away from me.”

Beagles are using their own psychology to intimidate you and to show that they are in charge

It is possible that he is afraid and this is his way of showing his fear. Has he been subjected to some incident, which makes him frightened of you? That is why the growling means “keep away or I am going to bite you if you come near me.”

Sometimes, growling is just a bid for attention. If that is so, ignore its growling and it will stop doing that.

Beagles may growl if they do not want to be disturbed when they are relaxing in one particularly cozy place. So if your Beagle growls when you try to pick him up, or when you approach him, look at the possibility of his knowing that he is going to be put into a box. Probably he knows that he is going to be moved because you want to vacuum that area. Or perhaps he is going to be locked up somewhere.

His mind has started to associate your approach with possible chaining, shifting or “imprisonment”. He is trying his best to prevent that from happening to him. So, if he growls and you “back away”, his mind immediately recognizes the fact that growling is one activity with which he can “control” you.

How Do You Stop Beagle Growling?

This is where you need a little bit of patience. You have to make your Beagle recognize the fact that you are not there to harm him. If it has started growling, while it is being house trained, you would need the help of a professional trainer to give you proper house training advice.

Puppy- proof your house by removing objects -which it can chew and destroy- from its vicinity. If it growls when you approach it, -especially if it is “guarding” some item-, pick up one of its favorite toys. Hunker down on its level and look it straight in the eye. Bring the toy close to its muzzle. Drop it in front of your Beagle and then walk away.

Try this at least two or three times a day to get your dog used to you. This will stop it from getting stressed the moment you approach it. It is going to understand that your approach means that it can look forward to something nice from you and you do not mean it any harm.

So now that you know all about these easy stop Beagle growling tips, use it to train your dog right away!

Why is beagle clicker training considered to be one of the most popular and humane ways in which you can train your beagle properly?

You want your beagle to obey all your orders and “stay” when you order it to stay and sit, do not you. That is why, you need to know all about why clicker training for dogs is one of the best ways in which you can train your dog to your own specification expectations.

What Are The Advantages Of Beagle Clicker Training?

A well-trained dog is a popular and happy dog. Also, the master knows that there is no question of its disobeying orders, when given once.

Clicker training methods are extremely easy to use. They do not use forceful and traumatic methods, to train your dogs to obey you.

Clickers are very easily available at any pet store. In fact, dogs get so used to the click, that they act reflexively and naturally, the moment they hear the sound.

So How Do You Start Beagle Clicker Training?

Clicker training for your dog needs to be started when it is still a puppy. A puppy has the average IQ of a two year old human child. It also has the concentration and interest level of a child at that age. It is going to be sidetracked with anything unusual and wonderful, so you would need to keep these clicker training sessions short.

Lots of love, appreciation and rewards are going to make your beagle bond with you. It will also know that you are the alpha dog of the family. So it will understand that you wanted to follow orders for the good of the “pack”. [family.]

Which Clicker Commands Should You Try Out First?

Just imagine a bewildered two-year-old child trembling with fear, because you are trying to make it do something, ordering it in a strange language, and in a loud voice. This is what you are doing to your beagle puppy, when you are training it. So, you need positive reinforcement, a soft yet firm voice, and lots of appreciation and “good boy,” which will help in the proper and systematic training of your puppy.

Start easy commands, like “sit”, “stay” etc. Your beagle cannot understand human language. However, it is going to understand the tone of your voice. A grown-up beagle has the IQ of a 4 to 5-year-old child. That is why it is good to understand some words. These repeated words, like sit, stay, heel, are going to be understood by the beagle, when accompanied with clicks and rewards for a job well-done.

Puppies, especially beagle pups are very playful. And if you make their training sessions fun sessions without too much of impatient shouting, they are going to consider this training activity to be “Really Good Fun.” On the other hand, they are going to be terrified of you, if you shout at them, because they really do not understand what you want them to do.

So beagle clicker training can only be done with lots of perseverance and patience. The end results are going to be well worth it, with a happy, healthy, secure, well-adjusted and well-trained beagle.

Teaching your beagle basic commands is necessary, because a well-trained dog is going to be a joy to have around for the rest of its days.

Beagle training should start when the beagle is still a puppy. Some of the more experienced beagle trainer experts use a number of methods like clicker training, etc. this training method does not use any sort of force.

Points To Note While Teaching Your Beagle Basic Commands

Keep your training sessions short. Your puppy is just a baby. It is going to lose interest if you persist on training it for more than 10 min. in one session.

Do not shout at your Beagle. It is going to scare and confuse it.

Do not talk to it in a loud voice. That is going to intimidate it.

Do not hit your puppy. That is almost as bad as hitting a one-year-old baby, which did not understand what you wanted it to do.

Keep the commands consistent. Do not spend 20 min. every day this week trying to teach it “come” and then suddenly change that command to “here, boy ” and expected to understand.

Make your Beagle understand what you want it to do-

Simple word commands are not going to confuse it. Imagine your Beagle to have a vocabulary of 30 to 40 words. The rest of the time, it looks at you trying to “read” your facial expressions and the tone of your voice. So if your Beagle has a proper understanding of the words spoken it will know what you want it to do. It will also know what you do not want it to do.

Remember that all dogs want a leader. They want to feel that they can trust the leader. They also want to feel that the leader is in control. That is why the training session has to be done by just one person. It is of no use, you training your Beagle for a couple of days and then losing interest. And then somebody else picks up the training, from where you left off. This is only going to confuse that poor little beagle puppy.

I would advise you to train your dog instead of sending it to dog obedience and training schools. Your dog may have learned to “sit”, “stay”, “heel”, and “come” from an experienced dog trainer. But is it going to follow the same commands when you speak them? I would not think so, because according to the dog, you are not the leader. It was that strange man in that strange school blowing the whistle, clicking, saying “good boy,” and giving it treats.

Your Beagle has to learn your body language and facial expressions, before it learns words. So if it knows that you are happy with its actions, it is going to do those actions again and again to earn your appreciation and treats.

Remember that you have to earn your dog’s affection and respect. So once it understands that you intend to take the trouble to teach it, it is going to start respecting you. This is only going to be done through lots of patience. Also, you should know what you are doing. So- be consistent, but also make the training sessions fun. Do not make the dog think that it has to go through a boring routine, with a scary human shouting at it.

Teaching your dog basic commands is not difficult at all, and this can be done through lots of patience and perseverance. Keep your tone, body language, words and gestures consistent and you are soon going to have a very well-trained and happy Beagle.

Beagles are happy, curious, lovable, popular, gentle, sweet and playful which gives you great scope when searching for ideas for beagle names.

The most well-known beagle is, of course, Snoopy, of the comic strip Peanuts. This is a perfect beagle name but if you are looking for something more original, read on.

What’s In a Name?

A dog’s name should fit his or her personality, roll easily off the tongue and be a reflection of the taste of the owner too. Here are some ideas for beagle names and a few tips on choosing the right one.

Try it out for size first. Imagine yelling something like “Jedediah!” in the middle of a busy street. Names that are too long, too difficult to say and would probably become tiresome after a while are not good ideas for beagle names.

Repetition. Your dog’s name is going to be used thousands of times over a decade or more so choose one that is easy on the ear and repeatable without having you trip over your tongue every time you say it.

Play around with it. Consider the nicknames and short versions that formal names inevitably garner. For instance, we named our beagle Turkish Delight and he became known as Turk, Turkytoo, Turkey or Turkish, depending on the mood and who was calling him. I’m sure he developed a bit of a split personality.

Remember that dogs grow up. A cute name like Pookie would suit just about any puppy but would not suit many a grown up dog.

Rhyming woes. A name that rhymes too closely with commands could end up unnecessarily confusing your beagle, so stay away from anything that sounds too much like ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘heel’ and ‘no’.

Great Ideas for Beagle Names

There are so many choices when it comes to dog names. There are girl names, boy names and unisex names.

Cute names. Names like Dixie, Harriet, Coco, Mocha, Pebbles, Candy, Chili and Birdie are all lovely names that are a bit different but not ridiculous. Any dog would be proud of one of these.

Dignified names. George, Buster, Portia, Carla, Chester, Red, Turk and Miranda are names that suggest character and personality. They are slightly more formal than most dog names, but still have a nice ring to them.

Silly names. There are endless variations of silliness when it comes to naming dogs. If that appeals to your taste, you can try something like Toodles, Pinky, Cuddles, Muffin or Snuggles.

Traditional names. Winston, Patches, Streak, Lucky, Charlie, Oscar, Rex, Jack, Champ, Gus, Brandy, Sheba, Buttons and Lady are all tried and tested doggy monikers that have endured over the years.

Unique names. If you don’t like the common or garden names that most dogs get saddled with you can try your hand at inventing something more unusual. Names like Buick, Cash, Corley, Zen, Bryson and Corsica are uncommon but not bizarre.

Have some fun with dog naming but remember the name you pick is going to be around for a long time. Let your dog’s character suggest ideas for beagle names and keep his dignity in mind.

Hunting with beagles for hare, rabbit and foxes is affectionately known as ‘beagling’ and is a popular sport from the UK to the States to South Africa.

The beagle was originally bred as a hunting and gun dog. Beagles are particularly good at picking up and staying with a scent, are intelligent, willing and have great stamina. All of these traits make them good hunting dogs.

History of Hunting with Beagles

The beagle has been used for hunting in England since the fourteenth century. Of course the breed has developed and changed somewhat since then and has become more popular in America and Canada than in its country of origin.

Pocket beagles. Beagle hunting used to involve horses and some of the ancestors of the modern beagle were small enough to fit into a pocket or saddle bag.

Exported. Beagles were exported to America from the UK sometime around 1840 and were strictly hunting dogs. They were bred to the present day standard from 1870 onwards and have spread worldwide.

Pedestrian pursuit. Nowadays the hunt is carried out on foot with one beagle, a pair of dogs (known as a brace) or a pack of beagles.

Why Do People Hunt With Beagles?

Hunting with beagles is an active, outdoor sport that suits all ages and requires no special abilities or particular clothing.

More about the chase. Hunting is generally an all-day affair and is more about the chase than the kill.

Outdoor fun. Beagling is an excuse to get out in the fresh air, run the dogs and participate in the excitement of the hunt.

Family fun. Hunting with beagles is suitable for all ages and is a great family outing.

The thrill. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of watching a pack of dogs working in unison and following the scent of a hare. The howling and baying that accompanies this pursuit adds to the exhilaration. Beagles ‘speak’ when they pick up a scent and fall silent when it is lost.

Shared enthusiasm. There is a great amount of camaraderie among hunters who can share their passion for the beagle and his talents.

Why use a Beagle to hunt?

Beagles are used in hunting for a variety of reasons.

Nose. Beagles hunt by scent and have extremely sensitive noses.

Hardiness. These plucky dogs will hunt in any kind of weather.

Stamina. The beagle can run for hours without collapsing from exhaustion.

Temperament. This dog has the perfect temperament for hunting. It is eager, cheerful, single-minded and loves to hunt.

Determination. Beagles are dogged when it comes to following the scent and will stay with it for long distances without giving up.

Pack mentality. Beagles are trained to run and work together in packs. A well trained dog will ‘honor’ the work of other dogs and run in unison with them.

Jumping ability. A dog that can successfully jump a rabbit is highly prized because this ability has been largely bred out of beagles in modern times.

It would be hard to find a healthier or more exhilarating sport than beagling. It is no wonder that hunting with beagles has become so popular.

Beagles are sought after for their even temperament and skills and have been crossed with a wide variety of other dogs to produce some interesting beagle mixes.

It has become common practice to take two types of dogs and cross them to get the best of both breeds. They are recognized as hybrids only if they are bred from two thoroughbred or purebred dogs. The endless combinations of dogs bred in this way have become known as designer dogs. The only thing stranger than the product of such mixes must be the names that people concoct for them.

Designer Beagle Mixes

The following are recognised by the American Canine Hybrid Club as bona fide hybrid varieties, not to be confused with ‘breeds’.

Puggles. This is a cross between the ever popular Pug and the Beagle. The result is a less active dog better suited to city living and is the most popular of the Beagle mixes.

Malteagle. Beagle and Maltese.

Meagle. Beagle and Min Pin

Schneagle. Beagle and Miniature Schnauzer

Patterbea. Beagle and Patterdale Terrier

Peagle. Beagle and Pekingese

Beagi. Beagle and Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Complex Beagle Mixes

There are even three way crosses with tongue twisting names and a rather dizzying array of ancestries. They include beagle mixes such as:

Chuggle. Beagle, Chihuahua and Pug

Pugglepoo. Pug, Poodle and Beagle.

Shelbea Hound. Shetland Sheepdog, Black and Tan Coonhound and Beagle.

Dog mixes used to be called ‘pavement specials’ and were not as valuable as their purebred counterparts. Nowadays beagle mixes and hybrids are much more popular due to their novelty factor and rarity.

Intelligent but hard to train. These are smart little dogs but because they have been bred to pick up and stay with a scent they can be single minded (some call it stubborn) and determined, which makes training them a challenge.

Poor guard dogs, good watch dogs. Beagles will bay, howl and bark at the sight of strangers, but will probably not attack them. The beagle temperament is too friendly for this.

Stand offish but easily won over. When you first meet a beagle he will probably be a bit aloof. Once he has warmed to you, however, he will show you his friendly, warm nature.

Generally obedient but distractible. Beagles are willing to be obedient but their hyper sensitive sense of smell means they are easily distracted and once they pick up a scent are very difficult to recall.

Good with other dogs, not good with other pets. Beagles love to be part of a pack but they do not take to non-canine companions, unless they are the human kind.

Athletic but not demanding with exercise. The beagle has great stamina, due to its hunting breed, but does not need to be exercised to exhaustion like some other dogs.

Like to run, like to eat. The beagle is energetic but particularly fond of food and is prone to obesity if not exercised regularly.

Not aggressive, not timid. The beagle has a very stable personality. He is steady and confident.

Alert but bore easily. Whilst the beagle is clever and responsive, he gets bored with the same routine.

Excellent With Children

One of the reasons that the beagle has become so popular is his ability to get on with children.

Playful. Beagles love to play, so children and beagles are perfect companions.

Small but resilient. Beagles are gentle but sturdy which means they can play with small children and take a bit of rough and tumble with older kids too.

Separation anxiety is common. Beagles love company and can suffer from separation anxiety if they become bored and lonely.

The beagle really is a great little dog. He is big enough to be a force to be reckoned with, but small enough not to get in the way. His calm and cheery beagle temperament makes him a great companion, whilst his independence means he is not too demanding.

At first glance, beagles look like the perfect pets with their sad eyes and cute, floppy ears. However, when you start dealing with beagle issues, you’ll find that this dog breed is not at all cute and cuddly.

It’s not even the beagle’s fault, because they are hunters by instinct. Before they became pets, they were bred as hunting dogs and this is just a case of old habits dying hard. So what are the different issues you might have to deal with as a beagle owner? Read on to find out.

The biggest of all beagle issues seem to be its love for barking. Beagles love to bark, because that’s what they were bred for in the first place. A beagle’s bark used to have so many purposes: they bark to alert their masters that game is nearby, when they find a trail, or when predators are near. However, these things might be obsolete if the beagle’s owners live in a sleepy subdivision with high-tech security. You might even be annoyed about the beagle’s constant barking – specially when it’s in the middle of the night. Your beagle might bark if he spots cats, other dogs, rabbits and other critters. He may bark at shadows and rustling of trees. He may even just bark because he’s bored that he doesn’t have anything hunting-related to do. Although these beagle issues may be a big problem for you and your neighbors, you have to resist trying to get him to stop barking. You want your beagle to still bark whenever there’s an intruder or if you need to be alerted of danger. The best way is to train your beagle to bark only in certain situations.

So if we are dealing with beagle issues, what are they?

Beagle issues also include the beagle’s fondness for digging. Beagles dig for a lot of reasons and most of them are rooted deep in their instincts. Beagles may dig to store their food or to unearth something they smell beneath the soil, be it a critter or something else. This can be a big problem for people who spend a lot of time landscaping. Nothing looks worse on a manicured lawn than freshly turned dirt and holes. One way of stopping this behavior would be to change fertilizers or to stop using them. Some fertilizers have a distinct scent that attracts Beagles, causing them to dig up the soil so they can get a closer whiff. Like many beagle issues, your beagle might just be doing this because it is bored. If that’s the case, make sure your dog gets enough exercise or has enough room to run around. Beagles tend to dig around when they feel trapped or enclosed in a small space.

Lastly, because of their hunting instincts, beagles tend to be aggressive. Unlike other beagle issues, this one can’t be solved so easily, as the level of aggression is different for every beagle. It also takes a lot of patience and effort to finally get your beagle to stop being aggressive. There are a lot of books and internet sites which deal with this beagle issue and it’s just a case of trial and error to find which one works best for you.

Beating beagle aggression is a difficult process which may take a long time, depending on how much the beagle is still in tune with his hunting instincts. Below are some tips on how to manage beagle aggression and how to make your beagle stop with this behavior.

Assume the alpha role. Most beagles are aggressive because they think they’re in charge, and being aggressive is a way for him to tell everyone that he’s the alpha dog. To make your beagle stop this, you have to challenge him. No, you don’t need to fight him because there’s one thing you have that he needs: food. Control his eating times and relay to him in a firm tone that his eating schedule is in your hands. Basically, you have to assert your right to alpha status. When your pet finally accepts this, it can make the beagle stop being aggressive all the time, and on occasions that he’s aggressive, a little scolding from you will make him stop.

Making Your Beagle Stop Being so Aggressive around people

Make Your Beagle a People Person. To have your Beagle stop being aggressive, it’s recommended that it socializes with a lot of people. This is specially effective if your Beagle gets used to having people around even as a puppy. When you have friends or relatives around the house, make sure your Beagle becomes familiar with them. Your reaction towards these people will also help greatly. If your Beagle sees your positive reaction towards these people, it can make the beagle stop with his aggression. You only want your Beagle to not display aggression with certain people, and not take away its aggression entirely, because you still want your pet to be aggressive towards intruders and alert you during times of danger.

Respect Your Beagle’s property. Beagles can be very possessive, specially when it comes to their toys or food. The only way to make your beagle stop with this sort of behavior is to give him his own space, away from other people. Once you’ve established your alpha status to your Beagle, he won’t attack you if you take his food bowl or toys away, but he might still show aggression if other people do it. Give your beagle an area that’s his own, away from where he would be disturbed by other people. Beagles are specially aggressive while they’re eating and they may show this aggression to people who are simply passing by while he’s eating. To make your beagle stop showing aggression out of possessiveness, give him a place of his own where people won’t step on his toys or walk in on him eating.

Making your beagle stop being aggressive is actually easy, if you are in tune with its needs. Like people, they also want to feel secure and safe and only show aggression because they are scared or feel threatened.

Arming yourself with information about the different diseases your Beagle can pick up, you can prevent them from happening, thereby lessening the need to go to your Beagle’s doctor, making you and your pet happier.

Most health problems with Beagles are related to their need for much activity. Since they were bred as hunting dogs, Beagles love to run around and dig everywhere, as they are also curious by nature. Digging around stuff and going places can cause your dog to catch different bacteria and may get scratches and marks on its skin. Beagles have loose skin, making it vulnerable to injury, and these injuries can possibly lead to infection, specially if your pet also picked up bacteria on his journeys. Health problems with Beagles like Alopecia universalis can cause your dog to shed its hair and become bald, or have dandruff-like particles on the skin. Irritated skin can also lead to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, wherein the skin becomes very weak and can get injured quite easily.

What are the most common areas that cause Health Problems with Beagles

According to the National Beagle Club of America, health problems with Beagles concern mostly its eyes, as for some unknown reason, the breed is prone to a plethora of eye diseases. A beagle can have optic nerve hypoplasia, a condition wherein one of the Beagle’s eyes is smaller than its socket. A beagle can also have inverted eyelids, glaucoma, cataracts, blocked tear ducts and progressive renal atrophy. Unfortunately some of these diseases are genetic, so there is nothing the owners can do to stop it from happening.

Being a pet with a healthy appetite, Beagles should be put under a strict diet. Letting your pet eat as much as it wants with each meal can result in health problems with Beagles, specifically vascular ones. Beagles can easily become overweight if not supervised properly, and this can lead to several problems with its circulatory system. These include an inability for the blood to clot, dilated cardiomyopathy, anemia, and several types of heart defects. Beagle owners should not give their Beagles more than the recommended amount of food per day, even if their pet keeps asking for more. Also, it’s important that your pet gets enough exercise, because it also prevents muscular health problems with Beagles, specially as they get older.

Unknown to most pet owners, health problems with Beagles can mirror several health problems humans have. For example, your Beagle can be allergic to certain things and can become sick because of improper hygiene. One example is infection in a Beagle’s floppy ears. Since it’s so large, moisture can easily get trapped and build up inside the ear, which not only causes an infection, but can make your dog deaf as well. Regular cleaning and proper care when bathing can help prevent this problem.

While many of these conditions can be remedied by a trip to a vet, others require long care and maintenance. As difficult as it may be, it is the owner’s duty and responsibility to give their pet adequate home care in return for all the joy they have given their owners.

For your beagles own safety it is important to have them on a leash when walking outside your property. Beagles were bred to hunt and therefore have an amazing sense of smell. Once your beagle catches a certain scent they go off in search of it. If your beagle isn’t on a leash it could end in sad circumstances. Your beagle could run into traffic or even be picked up by a Dog Patrol Officer. Therefore, it is so important to learn about beagle leash training.

Some important tips to know about beagle leash training:

Start beagle leash training as soon as you get your beagle home. The sooner you start the quicker your beagle will learn.

Use a leash no longer than one to two meters.

Start your beagle leash training at a place that has limited distractions such as your backyard or quiet park. This will allow your beagle to concentrate more.

Patience is so important! Due to your beagle’s natural hunting instinct and sense of smell they will lose concentration easily. Try not to get frustrated and to keep persevering. It will be worth it in the long run.

Try and stay positive at all times. Never get angry, yell or use physical punishment if they do something wrong while leash training. This will only upset, scare and confuse your beagle. Instead be assertive but not angry to keep your beagle calm. A calm beagle is much easier to leash train than a beagle that is scared and upset.

Do not do leash training when your beagle is overly excited. Tire your beagle first by playing in the backyard – such as a game of fetch. Once they are tired and calmer, it will be much easier to do some beagle leash training.

The Three Important Beagle Leash Training Steps

There are three steps to follow when beagle leash training. By following these steps you should have your beagle leash trained in no time!

Step 1: Put a collar and leash on your beagle while they are eating. By doing this you are associating something they enjoy doing (eating) with the feeling of having a collar around their neck. Once you have done this for a few days you can then pick up the leash and follow your beagle around your house for a few moments after they have finished eating. Each time increase the amount of time you walk with your beagle. Do this until your beagle is used to the leash and you walking with them.

Step 2: Once you have completed Step 1 you can then take your beagle outside. Your backyard is ideal as it is safe. Allow your beagle to drag the leash with you following them. After a while pick up the leash with one hand. In your other hand place a treat. Use the treat to persuade your beagle to walk by your side. Use positive reinforcement to praise your beagle when they walk by your side well.

Step 3: Your beagle may start to pull on the leash. If they do this turn in a clockwise direction and keep walking. This will make the leash pull your beagles head and they will have to try and keep up with you. Keep repeating this until your beagle walks beside you correctly without pulling. Remember to reward your beagle for their good behavior such as giving affection or treats.

Remember – start beagle leash training as soon as possible. It is one of the best things you can do for your beagle. It will keep them safe and greatly benefit you, their owner. Start beagle leash training today!

Being stubborn can sometimes make training your beagle a bit tricky. But don’t worry, with time and patience and our beagle training advice, you will soon have a well-trained beagle! So keep on reading – we are here to help!

It is important to realize that the training is not just up to your beagle. It is also up to you! Both you and your beagle will have to put equal amounts of time into training. By both putting in the time and effort, you both will be greatly rewarded.

Training your beagle will not happen overnight but it will happen! So remember, patience is the key. If you ever get frustrated, take some time out and remember the rewards you will gain by persevering!

An important piece of beagle training advice is establishing your alpha leader position early on. This is where you establish that you are the leader of your pack (family). By establishing this while your beagle is young they will learn to respect you. They will also want to please you so this will make training a lot easier. You can establish this alpha leader position by always eating before your beagle and not giving your beagle attention for the first five to fifteen minutes after you arrive home.

Beagles were originally bred to hunt. Therefore they have an extremely good sense of smell. Once they get a whiff of a certain scent they are off! This can cause some frustration when training as your beagle can easily lose focus. Remember this is part of your beagle’s nature, so try not to get too frustrated.

Here is an important piece of beagle training advice: start with the BASIC commands first! These basic commands include ‘sit’, ‘down’, ‘stay’ and ‘heel’. If you start with these basic commands they will benefit you greatly when you get to more advanced training. Remember, your beagle will not pick up these basic commands straight away. You need to repeat them over and over until they stick to their memory. A good tip to know if your beagle has memorized a command is this: if your beagle has to stop and process the command in their head before completing it then they haven’t fully memorized it – so keep repeating the command every day until they can do it straight away.

Use rewards when your beagle completes a command correctly. These can include food rewards or just giving affection. This will encourage your beagle and they will be keener to learn the commands.

Exercise is another important piece of beagle training advice. Remember to walk your beagle daily. If you have a backyard that is great as your beagle can run around all day. If not, make time to go to a dog park once in a while. Exercise is important as it will stop your beagle getting bored. A bored beagle can get anxiety which can make training difficult.

So follow our beagle training advice today. Remember, patience is so important. The rewards will be well worth it! Take these tips and start training your beagle today!

The Alpha Leader Position

The firstly and most important thing to establish with your beagle is your alpha leader position. This will show your beagle that you are the leader of your household or pack. By doing this it you will create structure for your beagle. They will also see you as their protector and will begin to trust, respect and listen to you. All these things will make your beagle training a lot easier. If you don’t establish this alpha leader position, then your beagle will be harder to control and train. They may also become aggressive or anxious.

Two ways to establish your alpha leader position:

Do not give your beagle attention for the first five to fifteen minutes after you arrive home. It make be hard, but you need to do this to establish your alpha leader position.

In the wild, the leader of a dog pack always eats first. So to establish this natural behaviour it is important to always eat before your beagle. This will show your beagle that you are the alpha leader and they will learn to respect you.

Once you’ve established your alpha leader position in your household you can then continue with your beagle training.

You have a serious problem if your beagle has a habit of escaping as it could be very dangerous. Your beagle could be run over, end up fighting with other dogs or even stolen. This is why it is important to learn the reasons behind why your beagle is escaping so you can stop it from occurring. But, before this happens, for your beagle’s safety you have to make changes to your property. This will lessen the chances of your beagle actually leaving the property

How Is Your Beagle Escaping?

There are lots of ways your beagle can escape. If your fence isn’t too high then your beagle could easily be jumping over. Beagles are also known to be excellent diggers. So your beagle could easily be digging an escape route under your fence. If you do find your beagle has escaped it is important to not get angry when you find them. This will only make your beagle scared. It will also make it harder to try and change their behavior. The important things is to find out exactly how your beagle is escaping so you can make the appropriate changes.

How to Stop Your Beagle Escaping

If you make the following alterations to your property, the chances of your beagle actually escaping are low.

Stopping your beagle jumping the fence: Increase the height of your fence. This will make it very difficult for your beagle to continue jumping over.

Stopping your beagle digging an escape route: The best way to stop this is to bury chicken wire near the base of your fence. Or place large stones near the bottom of your fence. Both these methods will defer your beagle from trying to dig a way out.

Fixing a hole in your fence to stop your beagle escaping is easy. The harder part is changing your beagle’s behavior so they don’t feel the need to escape. You need to find out the reason behind why your beagle is choosing to escape, and then take the necessary steps to change the behavior. If you only fix the holes in the fence and not the bigger underlying issue then your beagle will just continue in their attempt to escape. Read on to find out the reasons behind why your beagle might be escaping.

Why Is Your Beagle Escaping?

Boredom: If you leave your beagle for a long period of time without any contact or entertainment then they may try and escape due to boredom. If this is the problem then you need to make sure your beagle always has something to do. Make more time for your beagle when you are home – take them for walks and play games. If you do need to leave your beagle alone for long periods of time then make sure you leave plenty of toys to keep them entertained. By keeping your beagle busy, they won’t feel the need to escape.

Breeding: If your beagle is male, when they reach sexual maturity at six months of age they have a natural determination to find female dogs. Because this drive is high, your beagle will keep attempting to escape. The best solution to this problem is to get your beagle spayed. If you do this it should stop the need to escape by approximately ninety percent. But, if your beagle has been escaping for a while prior to getting spayed then they may be in the habit of escaping and will continue to do it. So, the reality is you need to get your beagle spayed as soon as they are old enough. If you have a female beagle who escapes while they are in heat then you will probably end up with a pregnant pet! So, as with the male beagle, it is best to get your female beagle spayed as soon as they are old enough.

Scared: If your beagle is scared of something then this could be the cause behind your beagle escaping. It could be something simple such as thunder and lightning or fireworks or building nearby your home. If your beagle is scared it could lead to anxiety. Once you have figured out what your beagle is scared of then you can take the steps to help your beagle. For example, if they are scared of thunder and lightning then keep your beagle in a quiet room during a thunderstorm to make them less anxious. Make sure your beagle has a safe haven such as a crate, which they can escape to if they are scared. This will help decrease the possibility of anxiety.

Separation Anxiety: If your beagle escapes after you have left home then they may have separation anxiety. There are a number of reasons why beagles develop separation anxiety. These include having a death in the family, moving house, a change of your schedule or even after having spent time in a boarding shelter. One method to help fix separation anxiety is to leave your house for only five minutes and then return. Repeat, but each time increase the time you are away. Soon your beagle will understand that you will be returning and they won’t be so anxious. You can then easily leave your home for longer periods of time without your beagle escaping. If this does not work then you may need to consult a professional trainer who will help your beagle overcome their separation anxiety.

If you are having trouble with your beagle escaping, it will take time to change the behavior. However, if you do take the time you will have peace of mind knowing that your beagle is safe at home and not in any danger. So take the time today and learn the reasons behind why your beagle is escaping. Then take the necessary steps to stop it! Soon you will have no need to worry about your beagle escaping!

Beagles have been around since the 1500s. They were breed to hunt – Englishmen would take packs of beagles out to chase small animals including rabbits and pheasants among many others. Beagles still have their hunting tendencies today, so it is important to train your beagle how to behave correctly around small animals. Beagles have since become one of the most popular choices of dogs due to their cute appearance and happy nature. And of course, everyone knows the ‘world’s most famous beagle’ Snoopy, which also made the beagle breed popular!

The Beagle Breed: Physical Description

Beagles are medium in size and are squarely built. They have a domed long skull, medium length nose, adorable doe like eyes and cute floppy ears. The beagle tail is set high and it can’t curl around. Beagles come in many colors including lemon and white, white and orange, white, lemon, red, tan and black. Their bark does not sound like a normal dog bark, instead it sounds like a loud cry or even a howl. A male beagle will grow in height to thirty six to forty one centremetres and weigh ten to eleven kilograms. A female beagle will grow in height to thirty three to thirty eight centremetres and will weigh nine to ten kilograms.

The Beagle Breed: Personality

Beagles are a very popular dog due to their size and easy nature. A beagle will easily fit into your family as they are very loving and gentle – excellent for families with children. When training your beagle it is important to be patient as they can be stubborn and have a mind of their own. As previously mentioned, beagles were breed as hunters, therefore when your puppy is young it is best not to trust them with small animals such as cats. You need to train your beagle around these animals before you can leave them alone with them. An important thing to note about a beagles personality is that due to their hunting nature they have a strong sense of smell. They love to sniff! They will pick up a scent and then they are off. They often they will not come back even if you call them. Due to this curiosity it is important not to let your beagle off a leash unless you are in a safe area. Overall a beagle’s personality is very fun, easy going and they will make a great member of any family. However, remember beagles have a stubborn side so it’s important to take the time to properly train your beagle.

How to Train a Beagle Puppy: The Early Years

When your puppy is eight to fourteen weeks old, they are most easily influenced. This is why you have to start training your beagle as soon as you get them home. However, do not train your beagle completed things when they are less than eight weeks of age. You can, however, teach simple things such as setting up a daily agenda. This will show your beagle puppy that they have structure and they will feel safe in your home. Start feeding your beagle puppy only once a day and remove food between meals. Make a time for walks at the same time every day and also put them in their crate at certain times. During these first eight weeks you won’t be able to teach your beagle puppy the completed commands (sit, stay, lie down) but they will still be able to learn what ‘no’ and ‘well done’ means. But remember to only use these when your puppy actually does do something well or does something wrong so they don’t get confused. Never punish your young beagle puppy for something they have no idea about yet. And remember to never yell or use physical punishment as this will just confuse your puppy.. It is also important at this young age to teach your puppy that biting is not okay. They may be adorable but even nipping is not allowed. You, as their alpha leader needs to teach them from the very beginning that biting is wrong.

How to Train a Beagle Puppy: Adolescence

Once your beagle turns eight weeks and over you can begin teaching more complicated commands. These include toilet training your puppy, crate training, and teaching the commands ‘sit’, ‘lie down’, ‘come’, speak’ and ‘quiet’. It may sound like a lot of things for your beagle puppy to learn but if you take the time to teach these things when they are at a young age they will master them more quickly. Repeat these commands on a regular basis. The more you repeat a command, the more it will stay in your beagle’s memory. Get your family to learn the same commands as well. Soon your beagle will be an expert! And remember, at all stages of training, maintain your alpha leader position. By doing this your beagle puppy will listen and respect you more, making training a lot easier.

How to Train a Beagle Puppy: Older Age

As your beagle moves past the puppy stage into adulthood he will start to show his personality. The basis training should also be completed by now. Your beagle should know the basic commands, they should be house trained, should be able to walk easily on a leash and should be able to know when they have done something wrong. If your beagle can easily do these things then you can move onto more difficult commands. These include more fun instructions such as fetch, roll over and turn.

So, if you want your beagle to be an intelligent dog who listens you need to begin training at an early age. Start with the simple techniques when they are less than eight weeks, move on to the basic commands from eight weeks of age and then the fun can begin with the more completed commands as they move into adulthood.

Taking the time to train your beagle will be one of the most rewarding things you will do. So don’t be nervous – follow our ‘how to train a beagle’ tips today!
